Protect your CV against identity fraud

In the age of information, there is a need or desire to send information quickly and efficiently. It comes as no surprise that people are sending out personal information without the thought of the problem of identity theft. ID fraud is one of the most serious issues facing people today.

Your CV contains a wealth of information which could easily be used by ID fraudsters to steal your identity. Common details on CV’s include your address, phone number, email address, place of birth, nationality and even links to your Facebook, Linkedin, or Twitter which could open fraudsters up to even more personal information.

You need to ensure who you are sending your CV to is an authorised and credible recruiter.

Rest assured, Square Mile Connections is a full member of the Recruitment and Employer Confederation (REC) which means we have been accredited by the regulated body for recruiters for having sound practices when it comes to data protection and confidentiality. We are required to follow the REC’s strict policy on data protection.

We never send your CV to any of our clients or third parties without having your express consent first. When we have received your authorisation to send your details to a potential employer we omit personal information such as address, phone number, and any other information which could be used illegally. We highlight your skills and experience above anything else.

Here are some tips on how you can avoid being a victim of identity theft:

TIP #1: Use an accredited member of the REC (us!)

All members of the REC must conform to a strict set of policies and rules when it comes to data protection. You can visit the REC website here: www.rec.co.uk

Tip #2: Treat your CV as if you would your bank details

Make absolutely certain that you know where your CV is going before you hit the send button. Otherwise you could be transmitting personal details to an unidentifiable stranger in an unknown country.

Tip#3: Don’t send your CV ‘Blind’

When emailing a CV in response to a job advertisement, check out the company first before sending it so that you can be sure they’re legitimate. Most job adverts should contain a phone number, web URL or email address (including the company name). All of our advertisements will always have our logo on it. You can also view all our contact details on our website.

Tip #4: Open forums

Be very wary of posting your CV onto an open forum. It can then be viewed by anybody around the world, including potential fraudsters.

Tip #5: Only use an email address on open forums

If you do choose to make your CV publicly available remember not to include a home address or phone numbers. In their place, type something like ‘contact details unavailable on public version’ and use your email address as the point of contact.

Tip#6: Set privacy controls

On public job sites, check the policy regarding the privacy of your personal details and look to see if there is established user protection with password controls.

Tip #7: Omit unnecessary private information

Details such as National Insurance numbers, passport number, banks details and home addresses are not necessary on a CV and genuine employers never ask for that information on a standard online CV template. As recruiters we do need information such as passport for identification purposes, NI number and bank account number for temporary workers but this will be further down the line after one of our consultants have spoken to you and in the case of bank details, only when a temporary job offer has been made to you and accepted.

Tip #8: NEVER pay for a job offer or an interview

A recruitment firm is paid by the client and will never ask candidates for any payment. Candidates are the talent and product that recruitment companies ‘sell’ to employers.

If you are would like to speak to us about any of the above issues please feel free to call us on +44 (0)203 4404 133 or email regina@squaremileconnections.com
